As technology changes, job opportunities have changed with them. The newest wave of unchartered territory is work through social media. Instagram “modeling”, influencers, YouTubers, streamers, etc., have given people income in an entirely new way. Additionally, many people are now hired for traditional jobs based on their social media. Companies like “Funny or Die”, “Super Deluxe”, and “Playboy” make hires of big social media influencers through apps like Twitter.
I have met plenty of individuals through my personal experience on social media who have obtained jobs through their accounts on Twitter. Having a social media consultant who has a large following is an incredibly intelligent tactic for big companies to stay informed on social trends. For example: Pepsi is one of the most valuable franchises in the world. The company has endless resources, and somehow they still made a massive publicity blow with its Kendal Jenner/police riot commercial. An active/relevant participant of social media would have easily noticed the social mistakes in this video and would know how the Internet would react to it. To reach a certain amount of followers on any social media platform, a person has to know his/her niche and audience. These people can become experts on creating “viral” content and finding ways to manufacture a form of “fame” for themselves that previously would require a role in a movie or team of people. This concept is fascinating to me because never before could somebody amass millions of followers (or, “fans”) just by making free content on his or her phone. My blog and website focus primarily on comedy and the use of Twitter to eventually amass a following and potentially find employment. In “The West Virginia Surf Report”, a comedy blog, Jeff wrote: “I’ll leave you now with a couple of Questions. And since I’m bullet-pointing all my shit today, let’s keep it going. In the comments section please complete this sentence “It’s hotter than…” Sometimes I say hotter than owl piss, and I swore I heard somebody say that as a kid. But when I do a Google search for the phrase it’s all Surf Report. Seems unlikely.” Jeff used multiple great rules of writing to build an audience here. He incorporated his personality, he encouraged interaction, and he was funny. This writer also has a podcast which is another great tool to make money with social followings. Comment something you've seen online that has made you want to follow somebody!

Michaela, your web site and blog post definitely revolve around the current day popularity of Instagram Influencers; however, i guess I was never familiar with the different brands and companies you can collaborate with. I hope you find success in this industry and get to collaborate with the surf company mentioned in your blog.
